European cities sign declaration to counter fast fashion

At ChangeNow, a well-known gathering centred on environmental solutions, mayors from more than 30 international towns came together to express their worries about the negative effects of fast fashion on their communities and the environment.

Representatives from ten European cities, including Dublin, Paris, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Leuven, Annecy, Bologna, Rzeszów, Terrassa, and Turku, came together to support the Slow Fashion Declaration, representing a combined population of 6.5 million people. The goal of this collaborative initiative is to persuade the European Union, the G7, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to adopt rules that level the playing field between small-scale fast fashion businesses and slow fashion entrepreneurs.

The proclamation specifies numerous important goals, one of which is educating the public about the negative social and environmental effects of rapid fashion. By using public backing to lower rents for slow fashion actors, it also hopes to make it easier for them to access production and sales locations. It also places a focus on local employment creation and financial support for research and innovation in environmentally friendly technology solutions.

The declaration emphasises the role of public procurement in fostering new markets and customers for sustainable businesses and calls for financial support for new business models in the fashion industry. It also encourages the reorientation of grants and loans to support companies with a positive impact.

According to a statement from ChangeNow, the textile sector is currently to blame for serious environmental deterioration and breaches of human rights. By promoting moral and just production methods that put a priority on environmental sustainability and better working conditions for industry stakeholders, the Slow Fashion movement seeks to address these problems.
