The EU is Watching U
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), finalized by the EU in January of this year, introduces more comprehensive Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting requirements and broadens the scope of organizations required to comply from approximately 11,000 (under the previous Non-Financial Reporting Directive) to an estimated 50,000 organizations worldwide, many relatively small businesses. The CSRD represents a significant step in refining ESG data reporting, beginning what will be a continuous evolution in reporting standards in the years to come. Friday, 7 July, marked the end of the feedback period on the first set of CSRD sustainability reporting standards. Once ratified by the European Commission this fall, this first set of standards will take effect in January 2024, impacting an estimated 10,000 companies worldwide, including over 3,300 in the United States, 13% in Canada, and 11% in the UK.
